What is the name of the book that takes place in New York and has to do with to kids and a dairy of paintings?

The main characters are Lauren, David, and Nikolai. Nikolai is part of the Russian mafia and kidnaps Ms. Rosen (davids grandmother), and demands that he gets the "secret diary" that holds information about valuable paintings in it. I like read it in 8th grade. And it was a friction book.

I prefer the artist to know Hebrew to make sure it is perfect. I’m sure people who get tattooed in Kanji would prefer a Japanese artists, or at least someone familiar with the language.

I’m trying to recall the name of a NYC based "outsider" artist that paints the same naive profile portrait of a masculine male, with cigarette, on all manner of found objects. I’ve seen them on everything from album covers, to trays, to stereo speakers. The face is always the same, rendered in heavy black simple strokes, and has an almost tom of finland quality to it. If I recall, the artist is a picker for antique shops, and culls his objects as he shops for his clients.
